Gigi’s First Heat Game!

One of the newer students at our Miami English School, Giangiuseppe Torsiello (he goes by “GiGi”), made one of his dreams come true last weekend and went to his first Miami Heat game. As you can see, he is a SuperFan: Saturday night I went for the first time to a Miami heat pre-season game against the San Antonio Spurs. For that occasion I got a new haircut with the Miami Heat logo on the left side. Going to this game was like a dream for me because basketball is one of my favorite sports and the Heat are my favorite team. Also, three of my favorite players are Heat players: Dwayne Wade and obviously Lebron James, the third is Rajon Rondo who plays for the Boston Celtics. The game was cool, and I had a lot of fun, but it was just a pre-season game so the arena was half full and Lebron didn’t play, that made me sad. But the Heat won and D-wade scored 25 points so I was almost happy. At the break there was the cheerleaders show… well no comment haha. Plus at any timeout the DJ put on some music and the public started to dance. It’s very funny with some cameras around the arena filming you and you will appear on the big screen. It’s totally another mind and a other type of public than the Swiss public in a soccer game for example, especially in my town, Lausanne. I really like the atmosphere of the arena and the way the game was. I can’t wait for the begining of the season and I hope to have the chance to come back to see a game. Let me know if you are interested :). — GiGi (High Intermediate)

Floridians Fun at the Miami HEAT game

Our last EC Miami trip to a Miami HEAT game last month was a huge success and the students kept asking for more tickets, so last night a group of students went with Reese to the American Airlines Arena to watch the Miami HEAT play the Atlanta Hawks. Although many fans thought the game would be an easy game for Miami to win, the score was actually very close (89-86) and the HEAT only won by 3 points! The students were able to have many firsts during the adventure at last night’s game. We took the bus to the game together and this was some students’ first time on Miami public transportation. For other students, it was their first time leaving “the Beach” and going to downtown Miami. Students also got to see many new firsts such as 50-floor apartment buildings downtown and the enormous arena, which can hold a little less than 20,000 people. In addition to getting to see a close game, this group of students was also able to learn about the history of basketball in Florida. The game was a 70s theme night to honor the original Miami basketball team – the Floridians. During the game, there were silly videos of the players wearing afros and dancing to disco music. There were also challenges for fans to guess information about songs from the 70s. The HEAT players even wore special Floridians jerseys with orange and pink stripes. All in all, it was yet another successful HEAT game and EC Miami students will probably be cheering for Miami in the upcoming playoffs!

Let’s go HEAT!

Last night, some of our students left “the beach” with Nicoletta and Reese and headed to downtown Miami to watch some NBA basketball. The Miami Heat played the Sacramento Kings at the American Airlines arena and won 120-108. Congratulations Miami! While the score might make you think that the Miami HEAT were the sure winners, this was definitely not true for the whole game. During most of the game the score went back and forth until the last quarter when the HEAT took over and started getting more and more points. Our students were able to see multiple dunks* by HEAT players and many three-point shots too! Most important of all, they were able to see one of the most famous NBA players – Lebron James. Before the game, some students purchased HEAT gear, such as team shirts and giant foam fingers. Many students said that they enjoyed watching the basketball, but they also liked being part of the atmosphere in the arena. Watching  an NBA game at the American Airlines arena can be overwhelming, but with the HEAT dancers, cheerleaders, a special DJ, competitions, and, even flames and fire, it was truly a unique experience. Students became part of the cheering section and shouted “Let’s go HEAT!” and they even got to do the wave.** For those students who didn’t get tickets to last night’s game, don’t worry! EC Miami has tickets to the March 7th game versus the Atlanta Hawks. Tickets for this game go on sale at the EC Miami front desk on March 2nd.
